Japan is the dream trip for many Indian families and honeymooners: neon Tokyo, temples and geisha streets in Kyoto, Osaka's street food, bullet trains and some of the cleanest, safest cities in the world. Each season looks completely different, so timing matters. Here is how to plan Japan from Lucknow.
Choose your season
- Late March to early April — cherry blossom (sakura): Japan's most popular season. Blossom dates shift each year, and hotels sell out months ahead.
- December to February — winter snow: Hokkaido's powder snow, the Sapporo area and Tohoku's snow villages, plus Christmas illuminations in Tokyo.
- October to November — autumn colours: red and gold maples in Kyoto and the mountains, with pleasant weather.
- Summer: festivals and fireworks, though it is hot and humid in the cities.
The classic route: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka
The "Golden Route" suits most first-time visitors: Tokyo for city life and Mount Fuji views, Kyoto for temples and traditional streets, and Osaka for food and Universal Studios Japan. The shinkansen (bullet train) links them in a few hours. Add Hokkaido for snow or Okinawa for beaches.
